THE SHORTEST DISTANCE

I got the mail from a mentor of mine and I trust it will bless you. Read on…

If someone were to ask you to identify the shortest distance between two people, what would your answer be? If you pause and try to think of what the answer could be, you are not alone. When I was faced with the same question, I looked around and couldn’t come up with a concrete response. Before I let out the answer, let’s think about possible reasons why there could be a distance (other than space or time) between two people sitting in the same room or living together. Could misunderstanding be a root-cause? Could anger, hatred, malice, envy, or jealousy be the potential reasons?

Victor Borge, a great entertainer, a humorist and world-class pianist, spent his life entertaining people through music. In his career, he recognized that though people may sit next to each other in a theatre to enjoy his music, that they can still be distant from each other. What then is the magic or the shortest distance to connecting two people together? Victor states that nothing brings people together faster than laughter. When you laugh, it sends a message of joy, happiness, and contentment. God wants us to be happy. He delights in our happiness. He does not want us to be distant from each other let alone from Him.

A hymn that connects with the daily blessing of today was written in 1623 by John Milton of 1623. Milton was only 15 years old when he wrote the hymn “Let us with a gladsome mind” Milton realized that only a mind that is glad in the Lord can praise God. If you have a “distance” (issue) with someone in the church where you worship, there is no way you can be glad in your spirit unless you remove the distance. For the daily blessing of today, remove that short distance through laughter.

May you laugh throughout this year in Jesus’ Name. Amen

Have a wonderful weekend.

Freundliche Grüsse / kind regards!

Satanic verses! Jonathan angry at biographers

jonathan ebele.jpgIn what appears a throwback to 1989 when a fatwa was declared on Salmon Rushdie by Iran’s spiritual leader, Ayatollah Khomeini for his book, the Satanic Verses, President Goodluck Jonathan may have declared a milder fatwa on the authors of his biography, Wind of Change for being too explicit.

For that reason and some noticeable gaps, any hope that the official launch of the book could take place before the April, 2011 general elections dimmed during the week as the presidency ruled out any plan to unveil the 350-page book in the immediate future.
Originally scheduled to be launched either on December 21 or 22, 2010; the book is printed on the same type of paper used in printing Nelson Mandela’s autobiography, ‘Long walk to freedom.’

The book has 50 pages of photographs and was coordinated by Ono K. Apke. It was a joint project by Red Sapphire Nigeria Limited and Africagenda. It was printed in South Africa.

National Life investigations revealed that four professors, two doctors of philosophy and scores of journalists were engaged to write and publish the book.
The team met for several weeks at Bestway Luxury Suites, Franca Afegbua Crescent, Apo, Abuja.

The four professors are Prof. Alagoa, Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, Prof. Bawuro Barkindo and Prof. Tam Fiofiri.

Others are Dr. Opubo Daminabo, Dr I.M. Aminigo; Paul Abbey, Tony Amadi, Nigeria Tevision Authority, NTA big girl, Blossom Ubani, Chima Mbanuisi, Chukwuemeka Ifemesia, Idahosa Asowata and Ambily Etekpe among others.

The publication of the book was originally conceived to be a public relations project designed to burnish and shore-up the positive attributes of the President but it was allegedly turned to an academic text book by the writers.

Another reason why the launch was shelved may not be unconnected with the fact that some persons in the presidency were not too comfortable with the content of the book.
And as one Aso rock source put it, “If the book is released in the form it was printed, it would lead to a lot of controversies. It is better we just allow it to lie for now.”
The biography was silent about President Jonathan’s children, either from the first lady, Dame Patience or with any other person.

“In fact, it only mentioned in a paragraph that he had kids but nothing more was said of his children,” the source said.
In addition, the book did not state the President’s actual date of birth.
It however, revealed that the President was not financially buoyant before he became the deputy governor of Bayelsa State in 1999.

According to the book, President Jonathan bought his first car in life in the later part of 1996; a rickety Datsun Bluebird which did not need a horn for passers-by to know that it was on the road.

In addition, the book disclosed that President Jonathan had to call on neighbors to help him push the car most times before it could start.

“The car was bought from a grant given to him by OMPADEC (Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission) after six months of non-payment of salaries. He received N200, 000 along with others in his cadre, and with it, he bought the car. It was the only car he bought before political office in 1999,” the book disclosed.

For Dame Patience Jonathan, the book clearly stated that she was not in any form of formal employment before the husband became deputy governor. “She was involved in the making of yoghurts and ice cream which she sometimes had to preserve in the refrigerator in her husband’s office as they had no generating set at home for alternative power supply,” the book noted.

The book was, however, silent about how President Jonathan met ex-governor Alamieyesigha and became his running mate.

Following the gaps noticed in the biography, President Jonathan was said to have decided to read every single page of it before it is released into the market, more so, when the original intention of releasing it before the presidential primaries had been defeated.
The title, ‘Wind of Hope’ was picked because the biography was intended to give hope to Nigerians, especially those on the lower rungs of the economic ladder that they too can achieve their dreams and aspirations.
It was to be a campaign tool for the president.

It stated how the president from a remote village in Otueke in Bayelsa State and from trekking to school barefooted, rose to become the No.1 citizen of the country.
President Jonathan, according to the book, saw an automobile for the first time in his life when he was in primary school  which was a Land Rover jeep; he had to run into a near-by bush because he was afraid,” the authors of the book stressed.

“It took the jibe and jest from his sister for him to become bold enough to face the ‘monster on wheels,” the biography further revealed.

WHO IS AFRAID OF BUHARI?

I write this because of millions of Nigerians who are below 30 and who constitute a significant chunk of our voting population. This is the ICT generation that is largely ignorant about the events of the Buhari era (1983-85) and so can be misinformed and misled by needless propaganda. I have sat with many in the under-30 bracket and those slightly above who only have faint recollections of the Buhari era and the level of ignorance about that era is amazing. Before being MILITARY Head of State, Buhari had been Governor of one of the Northern States (under Obasanjo’s Military government) as well as Minister for Petroleum. He later served as Chairman of PTF under Abacha.

Please consider the following unassailable facts:
·        he birthed and supervised the establishment of our existing refineries.
·        there was no religious crisis while he was Head of State. It started under his successor IBB!
·        in his time as Head of State he reduced inflation from 23% to 4%, by fiscal discipline and a homegrown economic team (not achieved under any other era, even military).
·        JJ Rawlings of Ghana took over 2yrs before him, and killed all the corrupt leaders, while Buhari only sentenced the corrupt leaders here to prison
·        Under his watch as PTF Chairman, what he did in road construction in that short period hasn't been matched by 12yrs of the PDP
·        hospitals and universities around the country never witnessed as much benefits as they got from the PTF from any government after or before his time.
·        despite serving in senior capacity in the oil sector, first as Minister for Petroleum and then Petroleum Trust Fund, Buhari has no petrol station, much less a rig, refinery or an oil block like so many of our leaders.
·        He could have retired into nauseating opulence like an IBB or Danjuma or even OBJ but didn't
·        Instead of hobnobbing with the high and mighty, he has cast his lot with the ordinary man most of who follow him out of hope and belief in his values. People who know him have said of him... "All I need from Buhari is his word, I can take it to the bank".
·        he is the only politician in the North today who fills rallies without renting a crowd. The Kaduna rally of 2nd March is eloquent proof!
·        He refused to collect an allowance while serving as Chairman of the PTF because he said since he was already drawing a pension from government, his conscience would not allow him to draw another salary from the purse of the same government
·        He is the only former head of state that does not own property or land in Abuja.
·        Every attempt to rubbish him through probes in time past eneded up vindicating him! The man who was asked by OBJ to take over the running of PTF before it was scrapped with the aim of probing and indicting Buhari, was the one who ended up being prosecuted for misappropriating $100m of PTF funds! Buhari again, was vindicated
·        He has OPENLY challenged those who accuse him of religious fundamentalism to come out and show proof. No one has till today, taken up the challenge. His personal driver of many years is a Christian from Plateau State!
·        Nigeria was only invited to OIC in observer status. IBB took us into full membership. This is a quote from a 2001 write-up by Prof Omoruyi, one of Babangida’s hatchet men. “The period of General Babangida (1985-1993) represented the beginning of unmitigated Islamization of Nigeria. General Babangida was one of the loyal followers of General Murtala. This was why General Babangida took the fateful decision in 1986 to face the Nigerian Christians in particular and Nigerians in general with the plan of Muslims. He without the approval of the governing organs of the Federal Military Government organized a mission led by a non-member of the Government, the Sultan of Sokoto to formally admit Nigeria into the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC). When the Chief of General Staff, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe complained that he knew nothing about it and definitely said that he could not remember the matter coming to the Armed Forces Ruling Council (AFRC), he was shown his way out.
·        His government initiated the War Against Indiscipline that has made environmental cleanliness, queuing up, not urinating by the roadside etc features of our national life even till today

Does it then surprise you why corrupt people would be spreading such heinous rumours about Buhari? He is a threat to them and they know what he is capable of doing to corruption and corrupt people when he comes into office!

So shine your eyes and make the right decision.

If honesty and probity are the things you want for Nigeria, now is the time to choose right. When you cast your vote for the BUHARI/BAKARE ticket, you would have cast one vote for two honest men.

How Do You Give?

What Do You Give?

A smile… A kind compliment…

A word of encouragement… Your time and presence

Material supports in cash and Kind?

Why Do You Give?

Do you give as a sense of duty?

Or born out of principle

Do you give to placate your conscience?

Or to create an impression

Do you give to receive applause and praise from spectators and the recipient?

Or as a gesture to get back something from the receiver?

Do you give even when you know that the possibility of being paid back is below zero?

Or only to those who can return your manipulative gesture

When Do You Give?

Do you give only when it’s convenient?

Or do you give sacrificially

Do you give by personal scheming?

Or according to the principles of the good Book

How do you give?

”…CAST YOUR bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days…”

IF ALL YOUR COLORS WERE BLACK

…The beautiful colors of the rainbow…

…The golden lights from the setting sun…

…The beautiful flowers in their splendor…

…The warming smiles that brightens your day…

…The joy of watching your children play, take their first steps and grow…

…The twinkling stars arrayed in the night sky…

What if you never had seen them before?

Imagine for a moment; what if all your colors were black?

Consider this simple but mind touching experiment of being blindfolded for just a day while performing your regular chore. With or without assistant you’ll agree that those details you’ve failed to consider are truly worthy of your attention.

How we would be more thankful for those simple things we erstwhile have failed to stop for a moment to be grateful for.

I was privileged to be in a meeting recently. A young man in his early thirties donning a nicely fitting 3-piece suit was accompanied to the podium and handed the microphone. He’d walked-up so smartly no one would guess at that moment he had any physical disability. There was a loud applause as he eloquently announced that he’ll be doing some songs from his new 6-track album. It was then I realized that he was familiar to a good number of the audience.

His voice was so captivating and every part of his body was in complete resonance with his singing. Then I noticed something; he did not seem to move beyond one meter radius from the spot where he was handed the microphone. Cimi, as he’s fondly called by admirers never had the privilege to know what colors mean or look like.

He was born blind…

As I sat there, watching this young man do his thing all I could think of was, “What if all my colors were BLACK

That day, I made a resolve to turn my ReticularActivatingSystem to being more thankful for this beautiful GIFT of sight.

I hope you are inspired to do the same.

LET THAT CHILD SPEAK!!!

In one of my very recent speaking engagements, I was addressing a gathering of about 150 people. At the beginning of my presentation, I projected two slides consecutively on the screen and asked for an “agree” or “disagree” opinion of my well educated audience on the 6-word contents of both slides.

To my surprise, I had a total poll of less than 10 votes in this teaming crowd. This left me to wonder if the remaining number were mentally present with us. The rest of the session however, went very well with very encouraging response and intelligent questions and contributions; it could pass for my best session for that quarter.

Returning home, seated at the passenger side of my friend’s car, we talked about the seminar and I reflected back taking a short trip down memory lane. I told him of how, back in our nursery and primary school days, we would raise our hand so high asking to answer every question the teacher asks even when we don’t have the slightest clue what the answer is and sometimes even before hearing the question.

It gets even funnier when just after answering a question wrongly, my hand is already high in the air before the teacher is through with asking the next. Amazingly this was same for every other pupil in the class. It never mattered whether we got the previous question wrong or right; our hand just keeps shooting up again. We all wanted to keep trying again and again and again.

Things however began to take a new turn when we advanced to high School. At this time, though we still all raise our hand asking to answer the questions, our motives had totally changed. We had noticed that the teacher mostly points to the seemingly “dull” students to answer the questions rather than the “smart” ones. So as “sharp” students that we thought we were, we decided to raise our hands while silently praying that we won’t be pointed out to answer. Did you do same? Sure you’ll still remember such scenarios.

Today, it’s an entirely different story. Whether or not we know the answer, we just remain “cool” not offering to help out with the answers. Now we fear no teacher’s whip. “Let someone else answer”, we tell ourselves.

The question I ask today is this; “What has happened to that bold, confident, naive and unassuming child that once lived on the inside of us?” That voice that was never doing to allow itself be shouted down by voices of disapproval, jest, scorn, etc; That voice that always sought to express itself at all time- right or wrong.

Could it be the disappointments of previous failures or the disapprovals we get for getting it wrong?
Maybe it’s the shyness of being laughed at when our opinions/answers are not right;
Whatever it could be, that has silenced the voice of that confident little child can still be undone with careful, deliberate and concerted effort.

Does that child still have a voice or have you silenced it?
Let him Speak!!!
